Google will be ending support for users still on Windows 7 attempting to run the Google Chrome browser next week.
Originally, Google had planned to end support for Windows 7 back in July 2021. However, due to the pandemic, the date was eventually pushed back to January 2022 and then to January 2023. The reason being is that with the lockdown, many were unable to upgrade their computers and were stuck using older computers that still ran on older operating systems.
Google stated that “older versions of Chrome will continue to work, but there will be no further updates released for users on these operating systems. If you are currently on Windows 7 and Windows 8/8.1, we encourage you to move to a supported Windows version to ensure you continue to receive the latest security updates and Chrome features.”
Not too long ago, Microsoft also ended updates and support for Windows 7 in January 2020. The move by Google coincides with Microsoft’s decision as well.
Although Windows 11 is now the main supported operating system and Windows 7 was released approximately 12 years ago, at least 100 million computers out there still utilize Windows 7.
Many people often prefer to stick to an operating system that they understand and can use without having to learn how to navigate a new field or system. This is often true for older generations, since younger generations typically adapt quickly.
If you are still using a computer with Windows 7, Google is recommending that you update to a newer version of Windows. Windows 10 and Windows 11 are likely the best upgrade options out there.
