The upcoming Pirates of the Caribbean movie with Margot Robbie has been canceled

Margot Robbie has now confirmed that the Pirates of the Caribbean movie she was set to star in has been canceled by Disney.

Speaking to Vanity Fair, Robbie said that she had been working on the new Pirates of the Caribbean movie for some time, but the project was ultimately scrapped.

“We had an idea and we were developing it for a while, ages ago, to have more of a female-led — not totally female-led, but just a different kind of story — which we thought would’ve been really cool. But I guess they don’t want to do it,” Robbie explained.

Back in 2020, it was announced that Margot Robbie would star in the new Pirates of the Caribbean movie written by Birds of Prey screenwriter Christina Hodson. The feature was going to be an original story with new characters and not a spinoff.

Pirates franchise producer Jerry Bruckheimer was said to be on board with producing the Robbie-led film and another new Pirates of the Caribbean movie that was in the works with Chernobyl creator Craig Mazin. No word has been given yet on if Mazin’s reboot would move forward.

The previous Pirates of the Caribbean films starred Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow and grossed over $4 billion at the global box office. The last film to release in the series was back in 2017 with Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales.
