Tom Cruise might become the very “first civilian to do a spacewalk” outside of the ISS in his new space-themed action film. Donna Langley, Universal Pictures’ head, teased the film during an interview with the BBC. The film will cost somewhere in the $200 million range,
and will be filmed in space.
It has been known since 2020 that Cruise would be working on a production on the ISS, but what wasn’t known was that he may actually space walk outside as well.
“Tom Cruise is taking us to space. He’s taking the world to space. That’s the plan,” Langley told the BBC. “We have a great project in development with Tom, that does contemplate him doing just that. Taking a rocket up to the space station and shooting and hopefully being the first civilian to do a spacewalk outside of the space station.”
Although certain scenes will be shot in space, the movie will “actually [mostly take] place on Earth, and then the character needs to go up to space to save the day.” The studio chairwoman described Cruise’s role as “a down-on-his-luck guy who finds himself in the position of being the only person who could save Earth.”
Doug Liman, the film’s director, and Tom Cruise have worked together on projects in the past including Edge of Tomorrow in 2014. Not much else is known about the plot as things stand, however reportedly the two have been working alongside NASA and SpaceX, for obvious reasons.
“When a producer proposes something crazy to you, like, let’s try to shoot a movie in outer space, and NASA and SpaceX sign on, and Tom Cruise signs on… you’re just a little bit more receptive,” Liman explained to Thrillist last year.
This will be the very first film ever filmed in space.
