Neill Blomkamp is well-known for his films like District 9, Alive in Joburg, and Elysium, which all have one thing in common: they’re dystopian sci-fi films.
So why on Earth is he directing a movie about a race car game?
Well, because why not? The famous Playstation game is officially getting a 2023 movie release, and as things stand boasts a pretty impressive cast.
David Harbour, Archie Madekwe, and now Orlando Bloom have all signed on to join the project, with it being produced by Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions.
The script will be written by Jason Hall, the writer behind American Sniper, and Zach Baylin, behind King Richard. As things stand, we don’t have enough information on the film to state exactly what the plot will be about, however it has been described as “the ultimate wish-fulfillment tale of a teenage Gran Turismo player whose gaming skills won him a series of Nissan competitions to become an actual professional race-car driver,” according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Madekwe will be playing the role of the teenager, and Harbour the racer who teaches him how to drive. Bloom will be playing the role of a marketing executive who is set on selling the sport of racing.
The film will begin filming in Europe next week, and will most likely release on August 11, 2023.
