I’m not kidding when I say HBO probably didn’t see this coming. We previously reported on how the premiere brought in 10 million viewers in its first day, which effectively made it the biggest premiere in HBO and HBO Max’s history. Turns out, that number is up to 20 million now. The second episode isn’t even out yet.

HBO is probably doing a happy dance.

Game of Thrones has been a cultural phenomenon and a definitive piece in the world of dark fantasy shows, and House of the Dragon proves that it’s going to continue to be that way for a while. The prequel series takes place 170 years before the events of Game of Thrones. It tells the tale of a civil war that led to the downfall of House Targaryen, the ancestors of Daenerys Targaryen. Season 1 is set to be 10 episodes long.

The executive VP of HBO Programming, Francesca Orsi, said in a statement that “we are beyond proud of what the entire ‘House of the Dragon’ team has accomplished with season 1. Our phenomenal cast and crew undertook a massive challenge and exceeded all expectations, delivering a show that has already established itself as must-see-TV…We couldn’t be more excited to continue bringing to life the epic saga of House Targaryen with season 2.”

House of the Dragon seems to be one of many Game of Thrones projects that are set for the future. Currently, a sequel series about Jon Snow is in the works. Author George R. R. Martin said in interviews that about a half-dozen projects are currently in various development stages.
