2K has confirmed that the recent security breach that it was hit with has led to customer personal information being stolen and put up for sale.

Back in September, 2K was hit by a hack against its customer support service. 2K warned players to change their passwords, especially if they clicked on a link from a fraudulent email. Customer support at 2K was taken offline for some time while the issue was being resolved.

2K stated that a third-party had illegally breached one of its customer support vendors to the helpdesk platform that the company uses. After that, the third-party accessed confidential customer information and sent malicious links through emails to other players.

On October 6, 2K began to contact customers whose information had been accessed and later put up for sale.

2K explained that “the unauthorized third-party accessed and copied some personal data that was recorded about you when you contacted us for support, including your email address, helpdesk ID number, gamertag, and console details.

“There is no indication that any of your financial information or password(s) held on our systems were compromised. However, out of an abundance of caution, we encourage all of our players to secure their accounts by resetting passwords and enabling multi-factor authentication if they have not already done so.”

2K stated that the malicious links contained malware that could potentially compromise data stored on user devices, including passwords.

2K told players who clicked on the link the following: “We recommended restarting your computer immediately and using cybersecurity best practices, resetting all your passwords, using MFA where available, and using updated anti-virus software. Please refer to our post for additional guidance.”

Rockstar Games was also hacked back in September. Both it and 2K are owned by Take-Two. The Rockstar breach led to over an hour of Grand Theft Auto 6 development footage being published online. The hacker was allegedly arrested for the breach.
