It seems like YouTube has decided to scrap its experiment to limit access to 4K content to Premium subscribers only.
YouTube announced on Twitter that it has “fully turned off” the experiment that would require users to subscribe to Premium in order to play videos in a resolution of 4K and above. Earlier this month, reports came out across different social media sites showing that next to the 4K/2160p resolution option was the word “Premium.”
It’s not entirely clear why YouTube has decided to cancel the experiment. However, it is likely due to the amount of backlash the company faced over the idea.
It’s not a crazy idea to imagine that people weren’t happy to be asked to pay up $12 monthly in order to watch videos at a high resolution on the website. People unaffected by the experiment feared that it would become something permanent.
YouTube did not confirm if it is permanently removing the idea of locking 4K videos behind the Premium subscription. However, in a Japanese tweet, YouTube invited users to leave feedback.
