As Ramadan comes to a close, Muslims around the world are preparing to celebrate one of the major holidays in Islam: Eid al-Fitr.
Eid al-Fitr marks the official end of the month of Ramadan, a month in which Muslims abstain from eating and drinking during the daytime and strengthen their spiritual connection to Allah. Ramadan encourages reading from the Quran, praying, and refraining from sinning.
Eid al-Fitr directly translates to “Festival of Breaking the Fast.” In 2022, it will be celebrated by Muslims on May 2.
In many Muslim countries, Eid al-Fitr is a national holiday and is celebrated with major festivities, food, and gathering with family. Muslims celebrate their accomplishments for making it through Ramadan. In most households, families have large feasts, make special desserts, and give money and presents to each other. In the morning, Muslims head to mosques or gather in houses to pray a special Eid prayer.
In different parts of the world, Muslims celebrate Eid in their own special ways. However, the common points are food and gifts.

People wish each other a “Eid Mubarak” which means “Blessed Eid.” In many countries, Muslims decorate their homes with lanterns, lights, flowers, and more.
Before Eid, many Muslims will go shopping for gifts for younger children. Muslims are also encouraged to give gifts to needy children. In some countries, Muslims will buy special clothes to wear.
Eid is a time for Muslims to gather, enjoy their time, and spend important moments with family and friends.
