Alabama corrections officer who escaped with inmate has died in hospital

Former Alabama corrections officer Vicky White has died from injuries after she and escaped inmate Casey White were arrested in Indiana earlier Monday.

She had been hospitalized following a self-inflicted gunshot after being taken into custody. US Marshals stated that she had been in a car chase in Evansville, Indiana. Sheriff Dave Wedding of Vanderburgh County stated that her injures were “very serious.”

An 11-day manhunt had been conducted for the pair and saw tips flooding in from all over the country. One of those tips was able to help officers find the two, who were hiding out in a hotel. Vicky had been wearing a wig, according to US Marshal Matt Keely.

During the car chase, US Marshals had rammed their vehicle into theirs, causing the car to wreck. Authorities were able to pull Casey White out from the wreck. White had told authorities that Vicky “shot herself in the head.”

Casey White will be brought back to Alabama. He faces previous murder charges.

Biden confirmed that the participating providers cover at least 80% of the nation.

Biden calls on Congress to “immediately” pass $40 billion Ukraine aid package

President Joe Biden urged Congress on Monday to approve a $40 billion aid package for Ukraine, warning that U.S. aid for the country has been exhausted.

“Previously, I had recommended that Congress take overdue action on much-needed funding for COVID treatments, vaccines and tests, as part of the Ukraine Supplemental Bill,” Biden said in a statement. “However, I have been informed by Congressional leaders in both parties that such an addition would slow down action on the urgently needed Ukrainian aid — a view expressed strongly by several Congressional Republicans.”

“We cannot afford delay in this vital war effort. Hence, I am prepared to accept that these two measures move separately, so that the Ukrainian aid bill can get to my desk right away.”

Prison riot in Ecuador leaves 43 dead

At least 43 inmates at a prison in Ecuador are dead following a violent riot that broke out between rival drug gangs. It required more than 200 police commandos to retake the maximum-security wing of the Santo Domingo De los Tsachilas prison. The death toll is expected to go up.

Interior minister Patricio Carillo told reporters that the majority of the victims had been “executed with bladed weapons.”

According to The Guardian:

“It is Ecuador’s sixth deadly prison massacre since the beginning of 2021 pushing the death toll to nearly 400 as violence has spiked to unprecedented levels fueled by rivalry between drug trafficking gangs. More than 300 inmates were slaughtered in the country’s prison last year, including one massacre in Guayaquil’s Litoral penitentiary in which 119 prisoners lost their lives.”
