Bid for federal abortion law fails in the Senate

Senate Democrats failed to pass a federal law protecting abortion in response to the Supreme Court leaked draft that showed how the Court plans to overturn Roe v. Wade. The vote failed 49-51.

“Sadly, the Senate failed to stand in defense of a woman’s right to make decisions over her own body,” Vice-President Kamala Harris stated outside the Senate chamber following the vote.

The draft opinion would not result in a nationwide ban on abortions but would put the law in the hands of the state.

California cannot bar young adults from owning semiautomatic rifles, court rules

An appeals court panel in California has ruled that the ban on the sale of semiautomatic rifles to adults under the age of 21 violated to the Second Amendment of the Constitution.

“America would not exist without the heroism of the young adults who fought and died in our revolutionary army,” Judge Ryan Nelson stated. “Today we reaffirm that our Constitution still protects the right that enabled their sacrifice: the right of young adults to keep and bear arms.”

South Carolina man dies of a heart attack while burying woman he murdered

A 60-year-old man in South Carolina has died of a heart attack while trying to bury a woman he strangled to death.

Deputies identified the man as Joseph McKinnon. Police had responded to the home for calls of an unresponsive man lying in his yard. The woman, Patricia Dent, 65, lived at the home and was strangled to death by McKinnon who stuffed her body in a trash bag and tried to bury her in his backyard.

Biden predicts that if the Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade, they may overturn same-sex marriage

On Wednesday, President Joe Biden predicted that same-sex marriage may be struck down next if the Supreme Court does overturn Roe v. Wade.

“It’s not just the brutality of taking away a woman’s right to her body…but it also, if you read the opinion…basically says there’s no such thing as the right to privacy. If that holds…mark my words: They are going to go after the Supreme Court decision on same-sex marriage.”

US soldier killed in bear attack during base training in Alaska

A member of the US Army has died after he was attacked by a wild bear at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage, Alaska.

According to the base, the 673d Security Forces Squadron initially responded to the attack.

It was unclear what species of bear attacked the soldier. The area will be closed to the public.

American-Palestinian journalist, Shireen Abu Akleh, killed during Israeli raid in West Bank

Shireen Abu Akleh, one of Al Jazeera’s best known reporters and an American-Palestinian, was killed Wednesday while covering an Israeli military raid in the occupied West Bank. Al Jazeera and two reporters with her–one of whom was also shot but survived–have blamed Israeli forces for the killing.

Israel’s defense minister, Benny Gantz, said that he was in touch with US and Palestinian officials, and promised a transparent investigation. The Israeli military suggested that Abu Akleh may have been killed by stray fire from Palestinians, but later, Gantz said “We are trying to figure out exactly what happened.”

Abu Akleh was 51 and was a famous name in the Middle East. She is known for her coverage on the Israeli occupation of Palestine and was a US citizen.

EU to end mask mandates on flights and in airports

The EU has announced that mask mandates for planes and airports will lift next Monday.

“From next week, face masks will no longer need to be mandatory in air travel in all cases, broadly aligning with the changing requirements of national authorities across Europe for public transport,” EASA (European Union Aviation Safety Agency) executive director Patrick Ky said.

Unrest continues in Sri Lanka, with homes of politicians being arson-attacked

Protesters in Sri Lanka have no burned down homes belonging to 38 politicians as the country sinks further into an economic crisis. Sri Lankan troops have been ordered to shoot on sight anyone found damaging state property or assaulting officials.

At least nine were left dead in the violence since Monday, but the exact figure related to the protests is unknown. 200 people have been injured.

Lithuanian parliament has designated Russia as a terrorist state

On Tuesday, Lithuanian parliament declared Russia as a terrorist country–the first to do so–and recognized Russia’s actions in Ukraine as a genocide.

“The war against Ukraine by the Russian Federation is a genocide of the Ukrainian nation carried out by Russia. The Russian Federation is a country that supports and executes terrorism,” the parliament stated.

Coinbase shares plummeted more than 25%

Coinbase shares have gone down more than 25% on Wednesday and hit their lowest ever. The plunge coincides with the drop in the value of bitcoin, ethereum, and other cryptocurrencies over the past few months.

Bitcoin prices fell below $30,000 on Wednesday.

“The first quarter of 2022 continued a trend of both lower crypto asset prices and volatility that began in late 2021,” Coinbase said in a letter to shrareholders.

However, Coinbase said that it remains “as excited as ever about the future of crypto.”

Beyond Meat stock drops 20%

Beyond Meat reported a net loss of $100.5 million this quarter. Beyond Meat’s stocks have fallen 21% in after-hours trading on Wednesday.

Executies warned of “near-term uncertainty related to macroeconomic issues, including inflation and rising interest rates, COVID-19 and its potential impact on consumer behavior and demand levels, labor availability and supply chain disruptions, partially attributable to recent geopolitical tensions.”

Another issue comes from the fact that McDonald’s did not mention any further expansion of the Beyond Meat McPlant in the United States, disputing a report that it planned to keep the plant-based burger as a permanent menu item.
