The U.S. government has seized a superyacht in Spain owned by Russian oligarch Viktor Vekselberg, a billionaire with close ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin. The 255-foot luxury yacht was seized by Spanish Civil Guard at the request of U.S. officials on Monday morning, according to the Justice Department. The yacht had been in the Marina Real in the Port of Palma del Mallorca in the Balearic Islands located in the Mediterranean Sea.

The U.S. government said the yacht was seized over allegations of violations of U.S. bank fraud, money laundering, and the ongoing sanctions against Russia since the invasion of Ukraine began.
Attorney General Merrick Garland said that this “will not be the last” yacht seized. “Together, with our international partners, we will do everything possible to hold accountable any individual whose criminal acts enable the Russian government to continue its unjust war.”

The U.S. government also froze Vekselberg’s assets and barred American companies from engaging in business with him and his entities.
It is the first U.S. seizure of an oligarch’s yacht since the U.S. established the REPO task force (Russian Elites, Proxies and Oligarchs) as a way to enforce the sanctions placed by the government.
