Twitter is now testing a new feature that will allow users to create “Notes” that permit up to 2,500 words in a tweet. The usual limit is 280 characters, making this new test a major one for the app.
The test will run for two months with a group of small writers in Canada, Ghana, the US, and the UK.
Twitter stated that the “Notes” was a response to people using the app to steer users to outside newsletters and posting pictures of longer announcements instead of being able to directly tweet them.
It’s clear that Twitter wants to keep users within the app and not leave to external sources. Instead, Twitter wants people to be able to read everything within the platform.
“Since the company’s earliest days, writers have depended on Twitter to share their work, get noticed, be read, create conversation – everything but the actual writing,” the company said, making the announcement with the new feature.
These new tweets can be edited after posting and can include photos. It’s the biggest update to Twitter since the character count was updated to 280 back in 2017.
Twitter is also currently in a deal to be bought by Tesla CEO Elon Musk for $44 billion. However, the deal seems to be stagnant after Musk expressed concerns over the number of fake accounts on Twitter.
