TikTok denies security breach

TikTok has denied recent claims that it was breached and that over 2 billion data records of user data and source code were stolen.

On Friday, a hacking group by the name of ‘AgainstTheWest’ wrote on a hacking forum that they breached both TikTok and WeChat. Screenshots of a data base that allegedly belonged to the companies were shared. The hackers claimed that they accessed the data on an Alibaba cloud instance that contained data for TikTok and WeChat users.

The hackers also claimed that the server holds over 2 billion records in a 790GB database that contains user data, platform statistics, software code, cookies, and so much more. AgainstTheWest claims that they target companies and countries that are hostile to Western nations and interests.

TikTok has denied the claims, stating that the source code stolen was not part of its platform. They also stated that the leaked user data could not be from their platform, as they have safeguards against these types of hacks.

WeChat and TikTok are both Chinese, but are not owned by the same parent company. WeChat is owned by Tencent and ByteDance owns TikTok. It is not likely that the data stolen was due to a direct breach on each platform.

Either way, staying secured online is a very important thing. That’s why we’ve written a guide for you all to take care when using the internet and to prevent your passwords from getting stolen. Check it out here.
