There will never be another game like Titanfall 2

I’ve come to a sad, but true realization: There really will never be another game like Titanfall 2.

Video games are just a part of my life at this point. I write about them. I make videos about them. I play them. They are pretty much my livelihood and my hobby all at once, which is pretty wild considering I only really started playing video games about four years ago. Sure, I played a few when I was younger, but not as intensely as I do today.

Titanfall 2 was a game I hadn’t really thought to play until about last year. I had heard that its campaign was brilliant and that its multiplayer was fun. Unfortunately, the Titanfall 2 multiplayer is basically unplayable (the Northstar client exists though). But the campaign is still just as brilliant as it always was.

Titanfall 2, although a first-person shooter title, somehow managed to evoke intense emotions. It is possible that it’s not necessarily the story that gets you, but more of the fact that the voice actors and their emotions feel realistic. BT might be just a robot, but he’s also not just a robot.

The story of Titanfall 2 follows a man named Jack Cooper who is a pilot for the Frontier Defense. Humanity is engaged in an intergalactic war, and it’s not letting up anytime soon. Throughout Titanfall 2, we get loads of action and movement that really set the stage for the success of Apex Legends today.

However, where Titanfall 2 excelled beyond its fantastic gameplay and stellar gunplay was its character development. Immediately, you can connect with Jack and you feel the emotions of the soldiers as they navigate through this unfamiliar war with extremely high stakes.

The writers set you up to absolutely love BT and his personality. The adventures him and Jack go on throughout the title are amazing, and there’s no shortage of fun.

The emotional toll of the ending (which I won’t spoil just in case you wanted to play the game) is really something else. I don’t think many games had the ability to make me as invested in their story in the way that Titanfall 2 did.

The thing is, Titanfall as a franchise has largely become just another generic game. A battle royale. EA decided to create Apex Legends as a follow-up to Titanfall 2, but never really gave us true closure on the story of Jack and BT. Gone are the Titans that we could enjoy in multiplayer. Now, it’s just another shooter.

Titanfall 2 was brutal and a game that really understood its subject material. Its executions and finishers were crazy, and they were well-made. Apex Legends is largely catering to children, so obviously, they dialed down pretty much anything brutal from Titanfall. Sad to say.

Sure, it’s a good shooter, but that’s not my point. My point is this: Titanfall 2 was an excellent title. It deserved to have another installment. Titanfall 3 would’ve been very interesting to see as a game. People clearly were invested in the story. But alas, I guess sometimes some stories must end.

In the end, Titanfall 2 was probably a game I’ll never forget. From its insane missions, to its fast-paced intense movement, to its incredible gameplay, Titanfall 2 was a journey. If you haven’t gotten a chance to take that journey yet, you definitely should. You can play Titanfall 2 on Xbox Game Pass and enjoy the campaign too.
