Parler is back on the Google Play Store after facing a year-long ban. The social media app was founded back in 2018 and launched as an alternative offering to mainstream apps like Twitter. The app advertised itself preliminarily as free speech-friendly platform.
It was initially removed in 2021 following the January 6 Capitol riot. Google had removed it on the grounds that Parler was used to spread misinformation and promote violent actions leading up to the riots.
Now, a year later, Parler has stated that it has made improvements to its moderation policies and is allowing “users to block and report other users,” as well as adjustments to “monitoring content for things like violent speech.”
Apple had already added Parler back to its App Store in May 2021 after Parler agreed to mark and hide posts that promote hate speech.
Despite its removal, users were able to download the app from the website while it was taken down from the Google Play Store anyways.
Google’s developer policies state the following about apps: “All apps on Google Play that feature User Generated Content (UGC) are required to implement robust moderation practices that prohibit objectionable content, provide an in-app system for reporting objectionable UGC, take action against that UGC where appropriate, and remove or block abusive users who violate the app’s terms of use and/or user policy.”
