Overwatch 2’s launch seems to be off to a rocky start, with servers being hit by a “mass” DDoS (distributed denial of service) attack.
Blizzard president Mike Ybarra said on Tuesday that the company is doing its best to resolve the issues that are preventing players from access Overwatch 2.
In a tweet, Ybarra said that “teams are working hard on server issues with Overwatch 2. We are humbled by the excitement of players and will continue to focus on issues and get players into the fun! Thanks for your patience.
“Unfortunately we are experiencing a mass DDoS attack on our servers. Teams are working hard to mitigate/manage. This is causing a lot of drop/connection issues.”
Impacted players have been seeing the following message when logging in: “We’re aware that some players are encountering an unexpected server error message when attempting to sign in. This is actively being worked on. Thank you for your patience.”
Since then, the servers seemed to be working until going back offline again.
Overwatch 2 launched today in early access as a free-to-play title. It is available on PC, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PS5, PS4, and Nintendo Switch.
Overwatch 2 will include seasonal updates every nine weeks, a battle pass with new content, and more. Players who have not played the original Overwatch will need to play 100 matches to unlock all of the original game’s heroes. Features like in-game chat and a competitive mode are restricted until new players have met certain requirements.
There is currently no word on when the issue will be resolved.
