Knock at the Cabin dethrones Avatar 2 in box office

Knock at the Cabin, the horror film from M. Night Shyamalan, has finally dethroned Avatar: The Way of Water at the box office. It collected $14.2 million in its opening weekend. Avatar 2 had been in the first place spot for seven consecutive weeks by then.

The Universal thriller was able to beat 80 for Brady, which came in second with $12.5 million. The Paramount comedy starring Lily Tomlin, Jane Fonda, Rita Moreno and Sally Field was able to get older audiences back in theaters.

However, critics were not very impressed with 80 for Brady, but audiences seemed to enjoy the film. 80 for Brady tells the story of a group of best friends who travel to the Super Bowl to watch Tom Brady play. It is possible that the film was able to get an extra boost after Brady announced that he is retiring.

Knock at the Cabin was able to dethrone Avatar: The Way of Water, but it is still the lowest opening weekend ever for Shyamalan. Previously, Shyamalan’s Old held that title in 2021. However, Old released during the peak of the omicron variant of COVID-19. It eventually would make $90 million globally.

Knock at the Cabin made $7 million globally, bringing the total at the international box office to $21.2 million. The film stars Dave Bautista, Jonathan Groff and ben Aldridge and follows the story of a family suddenly held hostage by strangers trying to prevent the apocalypse.

Knock at the Cabin only garnered a C- CinemaScore from audiences. However, it cost only $20 million to make, so it won’t be too difficult for the movie to reap a profit.

Avatar: The Way of Water fell to third place, earning $10.8 million from 3,310 cinemas in its eighth week, declining just 32% from the weekend prior. Thus far, the sequel to Avatar has generated $636 million in North America and $2.174 billion globally. It is currently the fourth-highest grossing movie of all time.
