It looks like Joker: Folie a Deux will not be a part of the larger DC Extended Universe (DCEU).
Although there is still some time before we get a glimpse into what James Gunn and Peter Safran have planned for the future of DC Studios, it has been reported that Joker: Folie a Deux will not be connected to the universe that the two co-CEOs will be leading.
Joker 2 (Folie a Dexu) is the sequel to 2019’s critically acclaimed Joker and will release in theaters on October 4, 2024. It it will star Joaquin Phoenix reprising his role as Joker and will also star popular singer Lady Gaga.
According to the report, Joker 2 will “exist outside of any cinematic universe that Gunn and Safran will be building out.”
This isn’t really a surprising announcement, as Joker director Todd Phillips did previously state that his film was not “really connected to that Universe,” in reference to the DC Extended Universe (DCEU).
It is currently unclear if The Batman and its universe that includes spinoffs like one starring The Penguin and one focused on Arkham Asylum will be under Gunn and Safran’s leadership or not.
However, all future DC Projects like the “Chuck Roven-produced Superman sequel currently soliciting pitches from writers” will fall under Gunn and Safran as a part of DC Studios, the new division by Warner Bros. Discovery. It’s set to follow a similar style to Marvel Studios with Kevin Feige.
