Warner Bros. Discovery has placed James Gunn and producer Peter Safran as co-CEOs of DC Studios.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, DC Studios will replace DC Films as a new division and oversee DC’s movies, TV, and animation projects. WB Discovery has decided to tap into director James Gunn to become co-CEO of this new division.
Gunn will be in charge of the more creative aspects in the studio, with Safran handling business and production elements. Gunn will also continue to direct projects exclusively for DC and Safran will keep producing. The two now report directly to WB Discovery CEO David Zaslav.
Gunn and Safran taking up the position replaces outgoing Walter Hamada, who left the studio last week.
Since the beginning of the Warner Bros Discovery merger, Zaslav has been looking into a new head for DC studios who will act as an overseer and overall strategist for future projects.
Games Gunn and Peter Safran have worked intensely with DC director James Wan on The Conjuring, Aquaman, and The Suicide Squad.
Gunn did confirm that he got the role via Twitter:
Walter Hamada and WB Discovery have faced tense clashes over executive decisions such as canceling the nearly completed Batgirl movie.
It looked like Dan Lin was set to be the next boss, but negotiations did not work out and Lin declined the position.
Although the new appointment of Gunn and Safran may unite some of the DC projects together, not all will fall under the DCEU umbrella. Joker 2 and The Batman universe (Matt Reeves) may not be under Gunn and Safran. However, all future projects will be under the DC Studios banner from now on.
