Video games are a passion of mine, but no other video game was able to capture my attention and keep me hooked and get me to play hours upon hours of it in a single day the way Mass Effect could.
Published by EA but developed by BioWare–a Canadian-based studio–Mass Effect has been considered one of the best SciFi epics in video gaming history. In my eyes, it is genuinely one of the best video games of al time. Not just of the ones I’ve played, but in general. There’s simply something about this franchise that I can’t let go of.
The Background
My first gaming laptop came with a 1 month free trial of PC Game Pass. I had the laptop for nearly two years, but I forgot to redeem it until the beginning of 2022. I finally decided to redeem it and amazingly enough, during this same time, Game Pass added Mass Effect to its extensive library.
My brother had been looking at my laptop screen and told me to try Mass Effect out since it looked good. I decided to go ahead and downloaded the Legendary Edition.
My life has not been the same since.
For about a week, I’d play for several hours on end, just running through the story of Mass Effect 2 without any complaints. I loved it. I absolutely loved it. I’d rave to my mom about how much I loved the game and how I couldn’t think of a single RPG I enjoyed as much as Mass Effect.
Mass Effect 2 – Why I loved it
Mass Effect 2 is one of the most fantastic story-based, scifi RPGs I’ve ever touched. When I was first thrown into the world of Mass Effect 2, I decided to go for the base-model design for the female Shepard. The beginning was enough to get me to keep playing, with its intense and action-packed sequence that had me on the edge of my seat.

Accordingly, traveling to all the worlds in Mass Effect, seeing the characters, the designs, the technology, and the vast amount of alien species was just a mind-blowing moment for a scifi author like me. I’ve been writing my new series, The Fallen Age Saga (which includes aliens of course), and I was very impressed with the ability BioWare had with its writing of such a powerful scifi universe.
The entire game was full of very likeable characters and the dialogue was so well-done. It felt natural and human, which is something that’s hard to accomplish properly in some video games. We all know the Oblivion NPC joke at this point. Mass Effect 2 didn’t suffer from lifeless NPCs. In fact, the NPCs seemed to have personalities and actually well-written dialogue choices.

As I walked around the Citadel or Omega, I felt like I could properly immerse myself in this world that I was exploring through the eyes of Commander Shepard. The threat of the Collectors and the Reapers was also very well-done and it made sense.
As a writer and gamer, Mass Effect 2 appealed to me in the best ways possible.
Where to Buy/Play
You can buy Mass Effect over on Amazon or you can subscribe to Game Pass and get access to all the titles in the Mass Effect franchise, as well as other BioWare games like Dragon Age.
