The White Mask Varre questline is one of the many questlines given to you in Elden Ring by the many NPCs that populate the world. White Mask Varre’s questline allows you to reach Mohgwyn Palace and access one of the more popular rune farms in the area as well.
If you don’t know who the White Mask Varre is, let me give you a reminder. It’s just this guy that you meet upon exiting at Limgrave for the first time. He’s the first NPC you should be interacting with in your playthrough and he’s the one that basically calls you maidenless. Now, at first, you’ll be gone from this guy for a while and you shouldn’t go back to him after exhausting all the dialogue options. Not until you defeat Margit the Fell Omen, which is the first major boss that you should be facing in the game.
Now, to defeat Margit, I recommend you reach at least level 20, if not more, use the wolf ashes, summon Rogier to help you in the fight, and then make sure your weapon is at least +2 or more. This way, you can guarantee a victory after a few tries. If you’ve already beat him, great, you can move on to the next step.
The next step in the questline is to go back to the white mask varre after defeating Margit. You’ll unlock a new set of dialogue and he’s going to tell you to go and fight Godrick.
Go Fight Godrick
To fight Godrick, make sure your weapon is at a higher level and unlock the ability to summon Nepheli Loux by going the opposite way of Godrick’s boss fight, heading into this room, and exhausting her dialogue options. Having her to help you fight is much easier because it’ll distract Godrick while you reorient your strategy.
Head to the Rose Church
\Moving on from that, if you head back to Varre’s location, you’ll find that he’s left you a message to head to the Rose Church. Before going to the Rose Church, go travel to the Roundtable hold. There, you’ll get access to a new room where the Two Fingers are located. Now, when you beat Godrick, you can get his Remembrance which you can convert to runes or use to get weapons and armors at this creepy lady sitting by the Two Fingers. Don’t convert to runes if you want to get all the weapons you can. I made that mistake, and I dutifully regret it. I was desperate for runes though, you know?
Now, once you’ve taken care of that, go to the Rose Church. There, you’ll find the White Mask Varre standing in front of it. Talk to him and he’ll ask you about what your thoughts regarding the Two Fingers is. Tell him you felt like they were off and he’ll talk to you more. Eventually, he’ll give you some Festering Bloody Fingers.
Invade 3 Players
Festering Bloody Fingers in Elden Ring are used to let you invade the worlds of other players. You’ll actually have to do this three times. I know this might seem intimidating if you’re not one to invade often, but basically, you don’t even need to do anything. This is really just a task that you need to get out of the way, so you can fight the other players if you want or just sit there and die.
(If you don’t want to invade other players worlds or you’re strictly offline, you can also wait until you reach the Volcano Manor and take that questline on. During this quest, you’ll be tasked with invading NPC Tarnished worlds and assassinating the Tarnished you invade. That counts as invasions for Varre, but this may take much more time and will be more complicated as you should be at a high level before you reach this quest).
Lord of Blood’s Favor
After three tries, you’re going to go back to the White Mask Varre and he’s going to reveal that he serves Mohg, the Lord of Blood. He’ll ask if you want to be anointed as a Knight of Mohg. Let him and he’ll then give you the Lord of Blood’s favor. You’ll need to soak this cloth in the blood of a maiden.
There are several ways you can complete this portion of the mission as there are three places where you can find a dead maiden to soak the blood of up. The Chapel of Anticipation has one maiden, the Church of Inhibition has one, and you can also kill NPC Hyetta, but you probably shouldn’t do this one because she’s tied to a questline.
Chapel of Inhibition
The Chapel of Inhibition is located northeast of Liurnia above the Frenzied Flame Village. There’s also a tower that releases Flame of Frenzy in this area, so you’ll want to take out the NPCs making this frenzy at the top to safely pass this area.
When you get to the Church of Inhibition, you’ll be met by an NPC invader who tries to kill you. If you just dash right past him and enter the church, touch the sight of grace and then die, you’ll respawn in the church. Your runes will be there and you’ll be able to get the blood from the maiden without really fighting anyone. Unless you want to fight the NPC, then go for it.
Get Inducted as a Knight
Once you’ve soaked the Lord of Blood’s favor, go back to Varre at the Rose Church. You’ll be officially inducted into the Knights of Luminary Mohg, but you’ll have to sacrifice a finger Assassin’s Creed style. Don’t worry, this doesn’t really have any impact on your character.
Varre will give you a reusable invasion item instead of the Festering Bloody Fingers so you can invade to your heart’s content. You will then also get the Pureblood Knight’s Medal which will let you teleport to Mohgwyn Palace’s region.
In the Mohgwyn Palace region, there will be an invasion by Varre. If you defeat him here, you’ll receive the Varre’s bouquet armament. That pretty much ends his questline.
