Here's why patience is important when you start a business

I think there’s a secret to starting a business that is often glossed over online. We hear about all the money that goes into a business, how to leverage social media, how to start a blog, things like that. However, there is arguably something very important to starting a business that lies within our minds: We need to be patient. Patience is not only the key, but it is essential to the success of any business.

Think about all the times you were being impatient. Maybe the delay and the wait was the best thing for you. You may never know, but patience is key to living a happy life. It’s also the key to growing a business. Not convinced yet? Here are four reasons why you need patience when building a business:

1. “Rome Wasn’t Built In a Day”

If you’ve never heard this saying before, it basically means that greatness doesn’t just suddenly happen. It takes a long time to build and lay the foundations out for success. You have to know that starting a business is a long game and it’s not a get-rich quick scheme.

You need to have a plan of action before you start your business. For instance, you need to know what your business is about, what you will sell/offer, what your goals are.

However, you can’t see your success if you’re not patient about it. You need to remember that it’s going to take time to see any real response from your business. You may not make profit in your first year of operation. If you call it quits too early, then you risk never seeing what could’ve been at the finish line.

2. Patience Keeps Your Decisions Smart

Impulsive decisions are very easy to make in the world of business. If things feel slow or you notice that you’re not at the spot that you were projecting to be at yet, then you may start to make choices that are irrational. These choices can easily harm your business and confuse you even further.

For example, if you are running a website and you employ proper SEO techniques but you’re still not seeing thousands of views every day, you might start thinking about employing black hat SEO techniques to cheat the system. What you may not realize is that using black hat SEO may destroy all of the progress you’ve built until that point.

By being patient, you have more clarity in your thoughts and in your processes going into your business. Take a step back and try to think of multiple solutions before you throw your hat in the ring and make a potentially devastating decision.

3. Patience Keeps Your Work Ethic High

One of the most difficult parts of starting any business is the fact that your work ethic plays a big role in your output. If you don’t have self-efficacy and you’re energy in your work is low, that will translate on your results.

It’s really easy to fall into the pit of despair when you feel like you’re pouring hundreds of hours into a project that just doesn’t seem to be working. However, do remember that every website you click on when you go to Google (including ours!) and every business that you shop from took time to build its reputation and become the thing that it is today.

Like I said earlier, Rome wasn’t built in a day. By being patient, you help your work ethic, which in turn helps your output while you’re working.

Sometimes, things take time. And that’s okay. Just don’t beat yourself up about it and put in the work needed.

4. Patience Lets You Learn From Your Mistakes

When you start a business, it’s super easy to make mistakes. It’s a learning process the entire time. When The DZSH Group first started its website, we didn’t know every tiny little detail about website building. We learned together and scaled the business properly. Now, we have an ecosystem of YouTube channels, social media accounts, and our website that ties them all together.

If we didn’t learn from our initial mistakes and remain patient with our ups and downs, we would’ve never built the brand that we built.

What I want you to get from this is that when you’re patient, you have time to understand what went wrong, how you can fix it, and what steps you can take to prevent the mistakes from happening again. If you’re not being patient, you won’t have time to do a proper analysis.

It’s really easy to think that a business is overwhelming and it’s really easy to think about quitting. It’s really hard to be patient, but every business that saw patience from its founders saw success. The more patient you are, the more you can allot from your brain power to growing your business.

And if you need a reminder, remember this quote from Thomas Edison: “Many of life’s failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up.”
