Almost 3000 SUVs, 2,863, sold in Canada will be recalled by the Ford auto manufacturer after arbitrary engine explosions took place.
Across North America over 350,000 of the same faulty vehicle was recalled, 39,000 of which were sold in the US, after the company found that the vehicles weren’t just carrying passengers, but also a risk for engine failure.
Transport Canada stated on Thursday that many of the 2021 Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator cars could catch fire in the front engine, even when the vehicle is parked and turned off. Of the 2,863 recalled in Canada about 509 were Navigators, while 2,354 were Expeditions.
Ford reported to the US Government that same day that they aren’t sure what’s causing the fires to break out in the first place.
Of the vehicles sold 16 have been reported to explode into flames, with 14 being from rental vehicles. Only one person has been injured so far. As things stand the company has not developed a solution to remediate the situation, only advising passengers to keep the car parked away from any buildings. Of the 16 fires 12 have taken place while the car was turned off.
The company is not telling consumers to stop using the cars, but only that they make sure it’s parked outdoors. The company announced that they would be treating the recall with extreme urgency and will develop a list of vehicle owners and their addresses.
Ford passenger vehicles general manager Jeffrey Marentic stated: “We are working around the clock to determine the root cause of this issue and subsequent remedy so that customers can continue to enjoy using their vehicles.”
The first reports of fire came in during late March, and as things stand the recall is limited to the specific SUV models built from any point between December 1st, 2020 to April 30th, 2021.
The company will also be recalling 310,000 pickup trucks in the U.S. and 25,000 in Canada after discoveries emerged that the car airbag’s have a risk of not inflating.
Certain models of the 2016 F-250, 350, 450, and 550’s airbags may be blocked by dust, the electricity disconnecting, which would ultimatley cut off their functions. Ford dealers plan to replace the wiring behind the steering wheel, allowing the airbags to function yet again.
Furthermore, Ford will be recalling 464 2021 electric Mustang Mach-E’s after discovering a software issue that causes the vehicle to randomly accelerate, decelerate, or shut down in general. The problem will be repaired by Ford dealers near May 30th however.
