Activision DDOS attack

Activision Blizzard suffered a DDOS attack that left PC servers down for hours, with players unable to get into games including Call of Duty, Overwatch, World of Warcraft, Diablo Immortal, and Hearthstone.

At around 12:15 AM PT on September 14, Activision acknowledged the situation, stating that the company was investigating an issue affect authentication servers that was causing failed login attempts for players.

Around 40 minutes after that tweet, Activision confirmed that PC servers were down due to a DDOS attack. “We continue to actively monitor an ongoing DDOS attack which is affecting latency/connections to our games.”

As of the time this article has been written, the issue has been resolved. Servers were down for at least over three hours. No one has claimed responsibility for the DDOS attack, however.

The issue is resolved now, with the servers being down for roughly three hours and 30 minutes, at least from when Activision Blizzard first reported the problem. It’s not clear who is responsible for the attack, or if there was a specific motive.

Activision is currently gearing up for a release of Call of Duty Modern Warfare II, the highly anticipated sequel to Call of Duty Modern Warfare that released back in 2019.

A Call of Duty Next event is set to go live on September 15 for more details on what’s next for the franchise. The Modern Warfare II Open Beta begins this weekend for PlayStation.
