Apple may start adding more advertisements into some of the apps that come pre-installed on the iPhone and other Apple devices. Apple has already begun internally testing search ads in Maps, which may display recommendations when you search for places like restaurants and more.

A report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman revealed that the ads may come to more than just Maps, and may also be added into Books and Podcasts.

Apple has already begun implementing a similar advertisement system into the App Store, allowing developers to pay to have their apps promoted on a search page for certain queries. For example, developers can pay to have their apps show up for “puzzle games” or “photo editor.” Ads on maps may work in a similar fashion, with businesses being given the ability to appear at the top of a search result when a user inputs a certain term.

Gurman also believes that Apple may extend these ads to its Podcasts and Books apps as well, potentially allowing publishers to place ads in certain areas or paying to get content placed higher in search results.

Gurman is also expecting that Apple won’t stop there and will allow ads on the Today tab and app download pages. According to 9to5Google, ads on the Today tab will show up as large cards with the word “Ad” placed beneath the app’s name. Ads on individual pages will appear highlighted in blue in the “You Might Also Like” section.

Apple TV Plus may also add a lower-priced ad tier like Netflix and Disney+ have been planning on doing. Currently, Apple TV Plus has a $4.99 monthly ad-free subscription plan.

Apple began the advertisement introduction to the app store back in 2016 and also displays apps in the Stocks and News apps.

Apple’s has grown its advertising business by 238%, generating $3.7 billion back in 2021 off of ads alone.
