Amazon has released the numbers for Prime Day and seem to be ecstatic about the results. Over 300 million items were bought during this year’s Prime Day. That’s up from 250 million back in 2021, making 2022’s Prime Day its best on record.
Despite consumer inflation being at its biggest in 40 years and fears of a looming recession, consumers did not stunt their enthusiasm for Prime Day. Amazon reported that 100,000 items were bought every minute.
The largest sold categories in the United States were consumer electronics, home goods, and Amazon-branded devices. In addition, 58% of the items sold were below $20.
Prime Day wasn’t the only sale event that saw major sales, as Target and Best Buy were also running promotions around the same time as Prime Day. All-in-all, total online retail sales in the United States surpassed $11.9 billion, 8.5% higher than last year’s event.
$3 billion was spent on small business items during the Support Small Businesses to Win Big Sweepstakes, which took place in the 3 weeks leading up to Prime Day.
Amazon Worldwide Stores CEO Doug Herrington said in a statement that “Prime Day is a celebration of our Prime members, who look forward to this event every year, and we’re thrilled to have delivered incredible savings to them once again.”
Amazon saw massive growth in the pandemic when consumers turned to online shopping for necessities and luxuries alike. However, this growth has slowed since as consumers return to life pre-pandemic. The results of this has placed CEO Andy Jassy in a difficult position, with Jassy now trying to cut back on spending in the company.
Amazon CFO Brian Olsavsky also stated that the company hired too many workers during the pandemic, which he stated has led to lower productivity and a $2 billion hit to the company.
