Amazon Games has announced that they are now working on a massively multiplayer online (MMO) game based on The Lord of the Rings, a high fantasy series by J.R.R. Tolkien. The Lord of the Rings has been a major staple of the fantasy world since its release and has since been made into movies, games, and other things.
The MMO by Amazon Games is set in Middle-earth and will feature stories from The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Amazon Games Orange County is heading development after a deal was struck with Middle-earth Enterprises.
Christoph Hartmann, VP of Amazon Games, said, “We’re committed to bringing players high-quality games, whether through original IPs or long-beloved ones like The Lord of the Rings.”
Amazon Games will publish the MMO globally on PC and consoles. A release date is set to be announced later on, but no specific timeline has been given yet.
“Bringing players a fresh take on The Lord of the Rings has long been an aspiration for our team, and we’re honored and grateful that Middle-earth Enterprises is entrusting us with this iconic world,” Hartmann continued, “We’re also pleased to be expanding our relationship with Embracer Group following our Tome Raider deal last year, as they’ve proven to be excellent collaborators.”
Amazon has attempted to build an MMO set in The Lord of the Rings before. However, that did not work out at the time. It seems like this time around, things are different though.
Amazon Studios produced The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power for Prime Video, which takes place during Tolkien’s Second Age of Middle-earth. It is unrelated to the upcoming MMO however.
Amazon Games has worked on MMOs before like New World and Lost Ark.
Amazon also announced publishing agreements with NCSOFT for Throne and Liberty, Bandai Namco Online for Blue Protocol, Crystal Dynamics for the next Tomb Raider game, and Glowmade and Distruptive Games.
