Using solar power for technology is something we’ve seen in the past, but Adidas is promising to step up the game with their latest pair of headphones. Adidas claims that their new wireless headphones can “convert all forms of light into battery life.”
The new RPT-02 SOL on-ear headphones are supposed to self-charge, meaning that workouts don’t have to stop because you’re headphones decided to take a hike. Using Exeger Powerfoyle solar panels built into the headband of the headphones, any type of light–natural or artificial–will be converted into battery life.
So, yes, you could probably toss this on your bed, turn on your light, and watch it charge.
On top of this, Adidas’ headphones are made with recycled materials and are IPX4-rated splash resistant, which means that you’ll be ready for when that unexpected squall of rain hits during your afternoon jog.
With its built-in battery, Adidas claims that you can go 80 hours without charging it. They can also be charged with a standard USB Type-C cable, just in case you can’t seem to find light anywhere.
However, these are not the first pair of headphones that took advantage of the Exeger Powerfoyle technology. Swedish-based company, Urbanista, made solar-powered headphones called Urbanista Los Angeles. The headphones released last year and came equipped with active noise cancelation–something the Adidas ones don’t have. Urbanista also has true wireless earbuds that use solar panels for charging.
The Adidas RPT-02 SOL are around $240 and will go on sale on August 23.
