Nintendo is reportedly investigating allegations of sexual misconduct, discrimination, and harassment at its American division. A source told Kotaku of a company-wide message from Nintendo of America President Doug Bowser, who revealed that Nintendo is “actively investigating” the claims.
Bowser reportedly said that Nintendo “will always” look into assertations like these and encouraged employees to report any violations.
According to a report by Kotaku, several female game testers said that they faced several forms of harassment and discrimination at Nintendo. Senior-ranking testers allegedly made unwanted advances and comments at the female testers.
The allegations also bring up pay gaps and attempts to suppress criticism as a part of the workplace culture. Female workers make up about 37% of Nintendo employees and 10% of contract-based game testers.
It is too soon to tell if the investigation will lead to firings or reforms. It’s also not the first time the game industry has come under fire for allegations of misconduct. Activision Blizzard and Ubisoft have also come under fire for allegations of toxic workplace culture, sexual harassment, and more.
