TikTok Music may rival Spotify and YouTube

TikTok continues to skyrocket in popularity, dominating Gen Z interests with its short video content that you can endlessly scroll through. A recent report by Google revealed that Gen Z is widely preferring using TikTok to search up information instead of the actual search engine.

Now, TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, is filing for a trademark application with the US Patent and Trademark Office for “TikTok Music” in May. According to the filing, which was brought to light by Insider, the app would allow users to purchase, play, share, and download music. It would also allow users to create, share, and recommend each other playlists, comment on music, and livestream audio and video.

ByteDance also filed for a trademark in Australia back in November 2021, but this wouldn’t be its first music streaming app. In 2020, ByteDance released Resso in India, Brazil, and Indonesia. It’s features are very similar to those of the “TikTok Music” app.

If “TikTok Music” will be similar to Resso, then it’s likely that users will be able to go to “TikTok Music” from the actual TikTok app. In Resso, users can listen to a full version of a song on TikTok, which would allow ByteDance to retain users within its ecosystem of apps.

Resso has over 40 million monthly users as of November 2021, but it’s a figure that’s projected to grow. It’s highly likely that TikTok Music may rival giants like Spotify and YouTube for music streaming dominance. In India along, Resso’s monthly active users grew by 304 percent between January 2021 and January 2022, versus Spotify’s 38 percent growth in the country.

No further information is available as of right now, but it is more than likely that if TikTok creates a music streaming app, that it may change the way the music industry works for a long time.
