Final Fantasy 16 producer says no PC version of the game exists

Final Fantasy 16 producer Naoki Yoshida has denied that the upcoming entry to the Final Fantasy series by Square Enix will be getting a PC port. Instead, he told interested fans to just buy a PlayStation 5.

A clip published to Japanese website Nico Video was shared on Twitter by industry insider Genki. Yoshida’s comments were translated by Genki.

Yoshida said, “Nobody said a word about a PC version releasing. Why is it like a PC version is releasing six months later? Don’t worry about that, buy a PS5. Sorry, I went overboard. We did our best, so please look forward to it.”

The only issue with the comments by Yoshida are that Square Enix said that a PC version of Final Fantasy 16 would be releasing. In the original trailer for the game, Square Enix claimed that it is “also available on PC.” A bit after the trailer released, Square Enix walked back that claim.

Back in November 2022, the PS5 exclusivity became a point of confusion again when a DualSense advertisement released. In the ad, it said that Final Fantasy 16 would only be a “PS5 exclusive for six months.” This implies that Final Fantasy 16 would release on some other platform in December 2023, six months after its June launch.

With all these confusing signals, it doesn’t seem very clear as of right now if Final Fantasy 16 will be releasing as an exclusive or a timed-exclusive. Timed PlayStation exclusives seem to be common, with more PlayStation games making their way to PC. God of War was recently ported and other titles like Spider-Man and Death Stranding were as well.

It’s extremely possible that Yoshida’s comments were also just jokes and that nothing serious was intended of them. It is also possible that Yoshida is under contractual agreements to not speak about the PC version.

Whatever the precise or exact reasons are, we’re probably going to find out soon.
