Antonov cargo plane, world's largest, destroyed in Ukraine invasion

Kyiv: The reign of the Antonov-225 cargo plane as the world’s largest aircraft has come to an end in the late hours of February 27th. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba reported that the plane was destroyed by Russian occupation forces at the Antonov airfield, near Kiev.

This was confirmed on Kuleba’s Twitter last night after referring to the plane as “The Dream.”

The plane’s restoration will take around five years, and cost over 3 billion dollars, according to the Ukrainian state-owned news agency Ukroboronprom.

Our task is to ensure that these costs are covered by the Russian Federation, which has caused intentional damage to Ukraine’s aviation and the air cargo sector.

Antonov, the company that owns the aircraft, stated that as things stand they cannot report on the state of the plane. The destruction has also not been verified, however satellite images from Maxar Tech. shows that parts of the plane’s hangar were strongly damaged.

NASA’s Fire resource system also reported fire in the aircraft’s hangar.
