It doesn’t look like the head of Xbox, Phil Spencer, is very impressed with the metaverse.
At WSJ Live, Spencer was asked about his thoughts on the metaverse. The Verge’s Tom Warren reported that Spencer was critical of the current state of the metaverse, calling it “a poorly built video game.”
“Building a metaverse that’s like a living room is not how I want to spend my time,” Spencer added. He did state that the metaverse was still in its early days that that it “will evolve.”
The metaverse has become one of the big things in the tech world today, with Meta championing the push for it the most. It does seem like Spencer’s comments were directed at Meta, especially with his mentioning of a living room. Meta’s version of the metaverse pushes for its use as a business tool the hardest.
Still, there isn’t really a definition that is widely accepted in regards to what a metaverse is, as a game like Fortnite is–by definition–a metaverse where players can bring in multiple characters and properties into a single world.
There is currently no indication on if Xbox will pursue a metaverse strategy in the future.
